OBSERVATORY MANAGER

Reporting to the Simons Observatory Project Office, the Observatory Manager will manage the engineering staff through the completion of civil construction, the implementation of the site utility systems (power, cooling, etc.), supporting the installation of the instruments, transitioning to operations, and science operations. Along with management of the engineering staff, the Observatory Manager will report to the Simons Observatory Project Office on schedule, cost, and other observatory metrics. The Observatory Manager will be the point of contact with all Chilean vendors hired by the site. The Observatory Manager will work with the Simons Observatory Safety Manager and Safety Office to ensure the safe operation of the observatory and all activities on the observatory site.

Skills & Experience
  • Required: Fluency in Spanish and English
  • Required: Understanding of labor and construction regulatory compliance
  • Required: Experience interacting with Chilean vendors and contractors
  • Preferred: experience in an observatory management role or similar.
  • Preferred: Experience developing budgets and tracking costs
  • Preferred: Experience developing and tracking schedules
  • Preferred: Experience in site safety, health, and environmental best practices
Special Conditions

 The Observatory Manager will be expected to work a standard 9×5 shift schedule, being located in San Pedro and on-call during their shift. Housing in San Pedro can be provided if necessary.

SAFETY MANAGER

Reporting to the Observatory Manager, the Safety Manager will manage the Simons Observatory Safety Office and Safety Officers. The Safety Manager will be responsible for:

  •  Assuring that the Simons Observatory site is a safe site operated following best practices
  • Managing the safety officer and working with the safety officer to always have an on-site safety presence.
  • Working with the site engineers to ensure regulatory compliance in installed systems.
  • Ensuring labor regulatory compliance on-site
  • Maintaining and developing safety policy and best practices documents
  • Working with the instrument teams to review all instrument installation and maintenance procedures from a safety perspective
Skills & Experience
  • Required: Fluency in Spanish and English
  • Required: prevencionista certification
  • Required: experience in safety policy development
  • Required: working knowledge of Chilean Norms and Regulations around power generation, electrical power distribution, safety equipment placement, and work at high elevation
  • Preferred: experience in safety management
  • Preferred: experience at high elevation
